denny: (I need stuff!)

Last night was work's Xmas dinner. I got bored and drank cocktails. This morning my head is teh fuzzy.

For Xmas this year, work bought me one of these:
http://iwantoneofthose.com/search.do?productCode=SQUBINVAR

Only problem with that is, I don't wear a watch. Especially not one that bulky.

I said 'thanks' and waited until everyone else had finished going 'ooh' and 'ahh' over their presents, then when my boss came over to ask to have a look at the watch I told him that I probably wouldn't wear it. Felt quite guilty, but it's an 80 quid present, it'd be stupid to just stick it on a shelf and ignore it - wouldn't it? He said they'll send it back after Xmas and exchange it for anything of similar value, but I still feel like I just told him Santa doesn't exist. He said they thought I'd like it because "it's black, with blue LEDs, and it's geeky"... all fair points. :)

They bought two of my colleagues these by the way:

Not sure why I didn't get the third colour... maybe they were having a dig at my time-keeping skills by getting me the watch. :)

What would you do if work bought you a crap present? What about if they bought you a really cool present that just wasn't right for you? Should I have kept my mouth shut and stuck it on a shelf? Bit tricky with something you'd normally wear every day though, they're bound to notice...

Happily when you work for a chairty present giving is a none-issue!
I'd have probably seen if I could sell it on.

Last time I got drunk was probably three or four years ago :) I don't have any religious objection to alcohol, I'm just not very keen on it as drugs go, so I generally don't bother with it.

And when I say 'got drunk', I mean 'drank alcohol', as I drink so rarely that I have trouble walking straight after one drink :)

That's not true - remember the night of the toffee apple cocktails? That was not so very long ago...

Thinking about it, wasn't that March-ish?

Admittedly not years ago, but not exactly recent either :)

Having never noticed you don't wear a watch, when I read your post I thought a.) How Kewl, and B. ) How Denny.

I thought the watch was a great present for you, but shows how wrong you can be.

Tricky situation, As long as you made it clear you were gratefull for the " kewlness " but figured it would be a waste, I'm sure they won't doc your annual pay rise too much :)

Yeah, I basically said it was really cool, but it seemed like a shame to own something like that when I wouldn't wear it - it'd be wasted sitting on a shelf in my bedroom.

I'm sure they will be fine with it then, after all it's company money, not personal funds that paid for it, if you get my drfit... not like they expect the light sabre massive to reinact the whole trilogy in lunch breaks over the next year eh ?...or maybee...:)

Observant of them to have noticed you dont wear a watch though. No wonder they thaught it would be a good present for you. :)

If you rather have those shiny things on the second picture (dont know if you do) which seem to be at the same price-level, just tell them. It will save them having to figure out what to get you, -and you/they will know you are getting something you like..

At least they now know that when you dosay "Oh" and "Weee" for a present, you really like it. No faking there. ;)

Oh and:
Merry Christmas handsome.

I have a hatred for unsuitable presents, especially wearables which I REALLY wouldn't ever wear. I don't think you did anything wrong, and if they'll exchange it, that is still reasonable.

Now if that watch had been a clock... I don't wear watches either, but an LED binary clock would be kinda cool.

an LED binary clock would be kinda cool.

I did think that too. I don't look at clocks that much, but having one like that on the frontroom wall would be kinda fun. I think they exist... maybe I should ask them for one of those, and then they'd feel that they chose almost the right thing.

If I had the quids I would buy a binary wallclock for my dad, as he's an oldschool geek who would appreciate it, while driving everyone else mad.

I think it's a good idea to ask for a wallclock version, at then it's decorative and cool.

I'd fall over in shock that they'd got me a present! I got a candy thong in the Secret Santa though. ;)

I never wore a watch until I got my binary one, but this one - because it suits me so well - I wear daily.

To the extent that I was referred to in the "thanks to everyone" speech at the Xmas party as "the man with the binary watch" (as well as some other very complimentary things).

There is also non-trivial evidence that I actually got my current job due to that watch, at least in part.
