The other side have come back with an offer of £110,000. My solicitor is asking for my opinion, but she's suggesting we could counter-offer at £120k with an eye to eventually settling at £115k.

I'm starting to get quite a strong feeling of "quit while you're ahead", but she still seems very confident.

I've decided to ask her to make the £115k offer ourselves, instead of trying to haggle them into making it. I hate haggling, always have. If they're mentally aiming towards £115k then hopefully they'll accept the offer from us rather than trying to worm their way down, and if they aren't willing to go any higher (or they were, but decide to worm in the face of my apparent weakness) then fucking hell, £110,000 is a lot of money - another 5k on top of it is pretty much garnish at this point.

Exciting afternoon. I think I need a drink. o_O

Legally speaking I have to reject their previous offer to put my counter-offer to them. A rejected offer ceases to exist - so technically, if I hold out for 115k, they could say 'nah fuck it, see you in court' and my only available reply would be 'oh bollocks' - I can't insist on accepting their offer of 110k after I've made a counter-offer and they've said 'no', unless they choose to re-offer it.

Realistically, it seems unlikely they're going to get that difficult at this point - they've conceded everything except the details. Still, I'm getting (very) edgy and I want it over by the end of the day if at all possible.

It's a silly game of horse-trading, same as buying a house. they *expect* you to counter with £120k, they *expect* you to settle for £115k. Just play along and hopefully by close of play today it'll be sorted - and you can have that drink, and buy the biggest round of your life ;)
