...former home secretary David Blunkett called publicly on the government to block the scheme.

He told BBC Radio Five Live's Weekend News programme that the suggestion was "simply unacceptable", and smacked of the "surveillance state".

Well... Hang on a minute. Yeah - it's cheeky, because it's exactly the sort of thing he would have done - but think about it. Why is he saying this now? Is it because he's outside of Blair's power; because he's got nothing more to lose? If so - and we know Blair has uber power over his cabinet, a presidential cabinet - then perhaps all this surveillance malarky is all Blair's idea.

But yeah. Cheeky motherfucker.
